18-05-2022 WORLD MIGRATORY BIRDS' DAY

 18-05-2022

The Ecotask Force (Vandeep) and Department of Zoology, St. Xavier's College, Ranchi in Collaboration with Jharkhand Envis organized a one day seminar on the ocassion of  The World Migratory Birds' Day on 18-05-2022. 

The event was organized to sensitize the students about conservation and protection of Migratory Birds, their habitat. The main attraction of the event was the lecture delivered by famous Bird Watcher A. K. Sahay. Various participants were also present throuh online mode via google meet. SEveral competitive events such as Quiz competition, Poster Making Competition and Essay Writing Competition was organized during the event.

A poster making competition was organized in PG department of Zoology in Special paper Entomology. All the 5 students participated in the competition.

 The posters were evaluated by the Head Of The Department, Dr. Bharti Singh Raipat. The poster presented by Anjali Dhan was declared as winner.

Educational Excursion tour to Betla National Park from 2-04-2022 to 03-04-2022

32 students of B.Sc. Zoology (H) Semester VI visited Betla national park for partial fullfilment of Undergraduate Degree in Zoology from 02-04-2022 to 03-04-2022. The Students were accompanied by Dr. Manoj Kumar and Mouli Chakroborty.
The tour included Morning Safari in the Betla National Park. Betla National Park is a national park located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau in the Latehar and Palamu district of Jharkhand, India. The park hosts a wide variety of wildlife. nitially comprising 1,026 km2 (396 sq mi) of the Palamu Tiger Reserve, an additional 226 km2 (87 sq mi) was added to the park in 1989 and 63 km2 (24 sq mi) of the Mahuadar wolf sanctuary. Betla was one of the first national parks in India to become a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, in 1974 The park is under administration of the Forest Department. The park has a variety of diverse eco-systems and abundance of wild animals. Elephants in large numbers are seen mostly between the end of the monsoon season, to the time when water holes begin to dry in March.
Predators include the sloth bear and panther, while scavengers include the wolf, jackal and hyena. Other animals include large herds of gaur and chital, large families of langurs, rhesus monkeys, Indian giant squirrels, mouse deer, sambhar deer, four-horned antelopes, nilgai, kakar, small Indian civets, ant eating pangolin, porcupine and mongoose. White tigers that remained in the park were transported to zoos.
Birds include the hornbill, peafowl, red jungle fowl, black partridge, white-necked stork, black ibis, swamp grey, quail, pied hornbill, wagtail, harial, dove, drongo, crested serpent-eagle, forest owlet, papeeha, and other birds usually found in dry deciduous forests. The Kamaldah lake attracts several varieties of water birds including the common whistling, cotton teal, knob-billed duck, snipe and geese.
After returning from Safari, the students visited the Palamau forts. The Palamu Kila are two ruined forts located 3 k.m from Betla National Park district Latehar in the bank of North Koel river , in the Indian state of Jharkhand. The old fort in the plains, which existed even before the Chero dynasty, was built by the King of Raksel dynasty. . The original fort in the plains and the other on an adjoining hill are attributed to the kings of the Chero dynasty. The fort in the plains had defences on three sides and three main gates. The New fort was constructed by Raja Medini Ray. The students performed quadrate analysis, canopy cover analysis and other observations and studies related to Ecology and Animal Behaviour during the tour.

Final Viva-Voce examination of  P.G. Semester IV was Held at Department of Zoology, St. Xavier's College, Ranchi on 1st October, 2021. A total of 21 Students attended the exam. The examination was conducted under the able guidance of Dr. Bharti Singh Raipat (H.O.D.), in the presence of  Dr. Manoj Kumar, Dr. Priyanka Saha, Ms. Mouli Chakroborty, Dr. Ramita Kumari and Mr. Ranjan. 20th March, 2021 - Webinar on AN UPDATE ON COVID-19 VACCINES

A webinar was organized by Department of Zoology, St. Xavier's College, Ranchi on 20th March, 2021 on the topic An update on COVID-19 Vaccines. Dr. Melvin George, Associate Professor, Clinical Pharmacology, SRM Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur Chennai, T.N. spoke on the above. More than 150 students of UG and PG of the department and all the faculty attended the webinar.

WORLD WETLANDS DAY CELEBRATION, 19 FEBRUARY, 2020

World Wetlands Day 2020 was celebrated in the department under the able guidance of Dr. Bharti Singh Raipat (HOD, Department of Zoology). The students of semester vi - Shashank, Ishan and Prem played important role in organizing the Event. During the event several competitions such as  - poem recitation, poster presentation, extempore and quiz competition based on environmental awareness were held. The event was marked by the presence of Dr. Bharti Singh Raipat, Dr. Priya Srivastava, Mr. Manoj Kumar, Dr. Priyanka Saha, Dr. Pipas Kumar and Mr. Julian Ekka. The program ended with Certificate distribution to the winners of the competitions.

VISIT TO DEPARTMENT OF BIO-ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT, BIT MESRA, FEBRUARY 16, 2020

A total of 18 students of M.Sc ZOOLOGY PART I, ZOOLOGY DEPT.,ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE, visited the Department of Bioengineering, B I T Mesra, Ranchi today (18.2.2020 - Tuesday). The students were accompanied by PG faculty Mouli Chakroborty & Manoj Kumar. The purpose of the visit was to learn about different biological equipments and their uses in Life Sciences. During the visit, the students got an opportunity to glance through a world class laboratory with best facilities which are available in the esteemed institution. The students were guided by Dr. Manish Kumar and Dr. Shashwati and others during this fruitful and extremely informative educational visit.

VISIT TO BIODIVERSITY PARK, 17-11-2019

For partial fulfillment of Undergraduate degree in Zoology,  a visit to The Biodiversity Park, Ranchi was organized by the department. A total of 52 students were accompanied by Dr. Bharti Singh Raipat, Mr. Manoj Kumar, Ms. Priyanka Saha, Ms. Mouli Chakroborty, Ms. Divya.

The students performed various experiments as per their practical syllabi.

At the end a cleanliness drive was held, the students of the department cleaned the surroundings near the entrance gate and disposed off the garbage in the nearby garbage pit.
