30
students of BSc. Sem-3 from Zoology Dept., were given opportunity to visit Jharkhand Silk Development Institute (JSDI), Hehal, Ranchi.
Under
Skill Enhancement Course, the Aim was to develop
Skills necessary for Sericulture.
·
DAY -1
o
We reached
JSDI at 8000 hrs.

Tasr silk worm Antheria mylitta was given by Shekhar sir ,
following this he guided us to resring site of Instar 5 generation worms.

Day -3
·
Priority was given on giving practical knowledge.
o Shekhar Sir gave lecture
on Precautionary measures to be followed during steps of silk worm rearing. He
further took us to rearing site where we where asked to identify diseased
Instars

§ We Were given Opportunity
to learn and practice the Art of Silk Spinning
This
marked the end of day -3.
DAY
-4
·
Fourth day of our workshop was designed to give us a field
study and to show the heritage of silk industry.
o We assembled at 9000 hr at
JSDI Hehal , we were accompanied by teachers of the JSDI. From there we started
our journey toward knowing and realising that what we had studied so far in our
theory was indeed mere a dust with respect to what is done in practical.
o The excitement was immense;
we reached a NURSARY situated at the outskirts of Ratu.
§ There we saw how nursery was being raised,
two plants were being grown mainly Antheria
arjuna & Moris alba.
§ The plantation was raised
using two methods namely by the use of plastic bag pot and the stem cutting
which was being directly planted in a group of three in a 3*3 raised pit.
§ Our guid Mr. Alok Kumar
Sir taught how things were carried out to maintain the nursery on day to day

§ From there we headed to our next destination, after we had a short
tea break.
o We reached CENTRAL TASSAR

§ It had a huge campus which
was divided into different sections the Hostel and Residential sec, the Spinning
and Reeling sec, The Research sec, and the Plantation sec.
§ At first we visited the Spinning
and Reeling Sec, where TASAR silk was being spun and reeled both using advanced
machinery and the old school systems.
§ Next we went to see the
live presentation on the development of different machines and technology that the
institute developed in the past years. We saw the Kamdhenu machine and alot of
upcoming technology etc.
§ Our next station was the
Pathology lab where we saw how CACOONASE a enzyme was being developed for easy
processing of cocoon. There we were also given knowledge about the different
new projects and research works.
§ From there we headed to
the Microbiology and biotechnology lab, this was a new adventure We first saw
the dif. Insect and pest management systems the we saw the gene mapping machine
which could do DNA figure printing, we also saw kinds of microscope there.
o There on we visited the
silk museum which presented us the history of silk development.
o With this our day ended.
We reached home by 1600 hr.
DAY 5
This was the final Day of our workshop. The topics which were

o Following this we had a
few class on Post Cocoon harvesting and there after the day was concluded.
Over all the workshop was very educational and
we had we learned new skill to add to our knowledge base.
We
